Frugal PC users often search for free antivirus software and often selecting a genuine one is daunting affair for them. However, free security software varies similarly as much as paid security software in their quality but they don’t offer every feature as the paid security applications do. In general, the main drawback in any free security application is the absence of frequent malware signature updates.
Most of the free security programs daily update their malware signature database only once. Due to this drawback some brand new malicious programs or viruses may not be detected. The free security software such as Microsoft Security Essentials checks suspicious samples having unmatched signatures by comparing with latest Microsoft’s online signatures. Similarly, another example is Panda Cloud Antivirus that checks suspicious signatures against Panda’s servers and always uses latest signatures by connecting online. So, by just having Internet connection, genuine security is available.
Another drawback with free software is that they have less scanning options compared to paid software. Even though both of the versions are developed by same software company, the free version misses some scanning options offered in paid version. For instance, Avira’s antivirus paid program scans the http traffic for various web-borne malware programs, whereas the free version AntiVir Personal developed by same company can’t do it. Similarly, AVG’s paid security software attaches to IM programs to provide additional security, while its free version AVG 8.5 doesn’t have this feature.
Finally, free antivirus software offer stuff that users don’t need and is intrusive too. Some of the unwanted features include installing search toolbars or social networking browsers, Ads to buy paid software and pop-up ads displaying some offers.Though some of these drawbacks are intrusive, selecting any free antivirus software can be good option as it gives decent security in no cost. But if you're concerned about getting more features without the unwanted stuff that normally comes with free antivirus software, then opt for paid antivirus program. Most of the well-known antivirus software's from AVG, Avira, Norton and more can be bought for a reasonable price.
